Rant: We had a discussion about inclusion in a team meeting today. A woman was brave enough to share her story and then the men changed the conversation to their experience with company culture and how we should share product concept ideas as the equivalent to inclusion. A few women tried changing the course of the conversation but it went back to ways to impress the GM for speaking up. So the rest of the women and urm kept quiet and well, nada. So frustrated! Anyways rant over. Cont'd below

It has to start from the leadership and work its way through the team until it becomes the team/company culture. Whomever were the most senior leaders in that conversation should have redirected the conversation back, and I guarantee you it would not have continued to veer as much if they had.

Human beings have survived on people pleasing in the past. It’s not a bad thing, but just that we don’t need this for survival anymore and need to deprogram it from our operating systems. Until then, we will continue to behave in ways that we feel will keep us safe and potentially help us thrive - at work, that translates to being liked by our superiors and so we behave in ways that will appease them. If what appeases them are some of these very real issues, that’s when the real changes will start occurring and cascading.

Anyway, this was my own personal rant from a similar interaction.

Cont'd: do you'll have suggestions for how to effectively have discussions on diversity and inclusion with your team? Would love to hear some thoughts and ideas.

Good points made already.

If I could add, it is important not to understate the importance of this conversation and others like it around culture, race, privilege, bias of all kinds, and effective leadership for the whole company.

Having said that, it is also important not to undervalue the skill set needed to facilitate these conversations.

Respectfully, if you have a professional run the initial conversations then you can make some traction and you can help prevent the wavering off topic that happened. Without skill, the lack of direction will continue to happen. At the same time, if you can also get some in your company trained, then you will have internal capability, which will be more cost-effective term. Hope it all goes well for you going forward.

Venting a bit: Are you finding DEI groups at work overrun with allies. Is there also an increase in celebrating said allies? Is it just me?

Most of the groups I'm in (esp. event teams) are being taken over by allies wanting to do what they think should be done to 'celebrate' whatever topic the month is, usually speaking over marginalized coworkers and rarely consulting with them. It seems like the only time this doesn't happen is for gay (usually yt) men or BHM. I'm just feeling so...minimized.

When you encounter an unfamiliar name, do you laugh or say it's hard to pronounce? Here's what you can do instead.

This is a safe, judgement-free,anonymous forum for seniors, leads, managers, partners, & principals to ask questions & get support around workplace situations which may have a DE&I component. This is also a place where leaders can learn more about DE&I without fear of asking “the wrong” question or saying something which will get them labeled as a “racist” “ignorant” or “insensitive” in the workplace. If you are providing answers/info, be informative & kind to everyone who posts questions here.

You CAN be that leader that people want to work with. 1st, self assessment is required. Be honest: As a leader, have you engaged in/accepted Attribution Bias with a dash of gender &/or race bias? (See the pic) This is something we all need to be aware of as we lead our teams, provide performance feedback, & model the behaviors we'd like to see more of on our teams. Be on the lookout for Attribution Bias in yourself & on your team. It's a hindrance to creating a high-performing, inclusive culture.

Do NOT claim you are "colorblind" in the workplace. 1. DE&I knowledge is now a core leadership competency. Colorblind claims will earn you the reputation of being DEI-ignorant at best & racist at worst. 2. Colorblindness within the context of workplace diversity is an obvious lie. You do NOT want to be painted as an intellectually dishonest leader. 3. Colorblind claims signal that you lack the leadership skills & vocabulary to have key conversations. Ask questions here, in this safe space.
