Sanity check: I am a 6th year at one of the larger BigLaw firms, on track to make NEP next year. I am not burned out, but have had my eyes open, and an opportunity at a midcap pubco with a small legal team in a strategic sector popped up. Pay is likely 270ish, all in (MCOL market). It's a bit earlier than I was expecting, and ability to pull in another year or two of biglaw salary and benefits (maternity leave) is putting me in 2 minds. Not sure how often opportunities like this arise.

What is your practice group? This answer is very different for lit (take it) vs corporate (you’ve got time). Also, are you planning to take mat leave after you make NEP or prior? Because the ups and downs of family planing can definitely complicate what was once a (comparatively) easy “nose to the grindstone” situation in the year you’re up.

Consider if you’ll regret not making partner (even NEP). It can also be a benefit to your resume to get that title on there.

like

I don’t really think partner titles on resumes will help your in-house career. People consider years of experience and the overwhelming majority of in-house lawyers understand that a 7th year “partner” is an NEP that is nothing more than a senior associate. In-house experience will be much more valuable in getting senior in-house role than addition years at a law firm or a partner title.

How big is the in house legal team? Any idea what’s the average tenure of the folks you’ve been working with? That’ll let you know if the in house gig is a lifetime opportunity. Otherwise, just hold out until you can’t anymore and get ahead on retirement and other nice things in life. Maternity leave is clutch in big law

like

I came in house and realize each has a benefit. If it’s a large legal team, there are likely established processes and less last minute urgent things. Makes for a lot easier transition. Also gives you a lot of folks to learn from

Have you gone thru the interview process and confirmed salary? I only say that because things change. If you want to explore the option do. I think it will flush out for you whether to stay or go during the process. I was ready. At a firm to 10 years. I went to a small legal team and we are incredibly busy. Not sure I like the set up. . I get paid decently (median) but have not great manager and have slackers on my team. That just translates to more work for me. I wouldn’t worry about the opportunity so much but look at what you want for your future.

like

That’s something to consider for sure. Good luck.

Thanks for the answers! Transactional/Corporate and plan was after I made NEP, though who knows how it goes - would be first kid.

Do you think women in the industry are paid lesser as compared to men.
Out of personal experience ,I can see that during compensation discussion HR person tries to convince a women candidate for a lesser package . Now this could also be the case where it is much easier to convince women to take up the job for lesser salary.
Whereas the male team member gets paid high (same YOE , same number of switch , similar prev CTC) though women are equally or more talented sometimes.

Do you pay your credit cards in full every month?

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under). It got me thinking about how many people adhere to this advice.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe.
