Ask your HR, everywhere is different. Some places cut you off last day others give you until end of the month. Also ask the new place when your new benefits begin!
This ^^ my last place cut me off the last day. I risked the 2 weeks of no coverage. Fortunately my new place started the day I walked in the door, though others don’t start til end of your first month. It’s a garbage system
HR here: in MOST cases (sorry @ project manager 1 😞) , your current insurance will run til the end of the month (depending on your last day). ok so as for the new job, sometimes it’s the first of the month following ur hire date, sometimes you have to wait like 30-60 days. yes, there very well might be a gap in your insurance, and that’s what Cobra is for. you pay the full price of an insurance premium to bridge the gap b/w both jobs. no u don’t have to call each place to cancel, ur HR handles that for you ur welcome 👍🏻
Thank you so much for your answer this was very helpful. Serious question though, what if your HR never answers your emails and also does not schedule an exit interview?
Also, if you only have 30-60 days without company insurance, you can risk it and then retroactively apply for COBRA if you end up needing it during that window.
When I started my new job, I didn’t have health insurance for about a month because open enrollment was over.
A qualifying life event, such as a change in job status and losing healthcare coverage, means you can enroll in a marketplace healthcare plan regardless of the open enrollment period
I can only really speak to my experience with this, as every place is different:
I quit my job and my coverage stopped the day after I left-- this is something that I knew would happen as it was stated in my benefits paperwork I received when I first started. I'd take a look at yours and see when if it's mentioned in there.
About two weeks later, I was able to enroll retroactivity in COBRA with my old company's discounted rate. This rate and when I'd be able to enroll was brought up during my exit interview with HR. They gave me paperwork that told me how to enroll.
My new job didn't start covering me until I was six weeks in because the cheap bastards only start your coverage after you've been there a minimum of thirty days and only on the first of a month. I started mid-feb, so that meant my new insurance didn't start until April 1st. Early March, I called the number associated with my cobra insurance and cancelled my old insurance for the following month.
I've never thought about this except when I was let go. 🤔
