Spend a shit ton of time taking people to lunch, coffee, etc. Not fellow partners, but staff, managers, and senior managers. Title doesn’t matter if you don’t have team to support you and you’ll drown quickly.

Sr manager, director, partner at a local/mid-tier often involves much more reviewing in the details than a big 4 partner or senior manager. Be ready to prep as well since staffing is even more of an issue.

Book by number of clients will be much larger than you’re used to. Without staffing, will need to be main point of contact taking a ton of time/effort away from bd, work, etc.

Specialists are much fewer outside of big 4. They’re often overloaded and severely backed up. Get on their good side ASAP.

If you’re in PCS now, I’d maybe see it as a viable option. But if you’re typically working on large MNC C corp clients, I think it’s a tough transition. I interned at a large local firm, 2 years at GT, and 7 years at B4. At the local firm, there were times that partners reviewed the tax returns I prepared (as an intern). The type of clients was also drastically different between GT and the local firm… at local firm some clients would literally bring in a box of receipts and bank statements and need to have a TB created from them. Others used Quickbooks and barely understood how to get their TB out. My B4 years have been primarily with MNC tax provision, so if that’s your background, I feel a local firm is not a good fit, especially if you haven’t spent a lot of time on compliance or partnership work. Partner at a mid tier firm maybe, local firm… I wouldn’t.

Are you partner track at your B4? Why do you want to make partner. Too many variables to say whether or not it's worth it based on the original post

Spot on, EY1.

I was in a very similar boat when I made the switch from big4 to mid-tier and definitely didn’t see the entire picture before making the jump.

Is it too late/inadvisable to go to law school to specifically aim for privacy work?

I just find some firms are unwilling to entertain the idea that anyone but a lawyer has anything relevant to contribute in this space…

This is probably an odd question, but i just found out that the professor who is teaching a tax class I’m in for school, is the Tax manager from a local firm who is assigned to our taxes as a company (I’ve worked with him regarding our taxes).

This isn’t like conflict of interest or anything right?

Interview tomorrow for a tax associate opening at RSM. Been working in a mid-size city (different firm) that is about 70 minutes from this new home office in a larger metro. How flexible is WFH or dual model going forward post Covid? Am interested in this position and going to tax, but not be able to relocate for family reasons. Don’t want to drive 700 miles per week M-F. What will dual model be like going forward? 1-2 times week, 4-5 month? Seems like tax was more flexible than audit pre-Covid
