I agree there should be MORE family provisions. Single person here and I'm wondering if someone adopts a child does maternity/paternity leave apply to that? I personally think it would be great to get some time off for end of life scenarios, not just bereavement but for some weeks where you really have to be around 24/7
Yes, you qualify for Parental
Leave for adoption. There is no FMLA for bereavement but if you have an ill parent or immediate family member you care for go to HR and see if you qualify for FMLA.
I think it should be expansive (aging parents/adoption/other things I can’t think of right now), but I don’t think a maternity leave substitute should be given to the childless. We should all be entitled to the same types of leave, if we decide to use them
Sounds like someone who has never had a baby or understands the amount of effort involved in the first months.
Parental leave isn’t a method to “reward” those who choose to have children. It’s not like people choose to have children solely because they get some time off. Feel free to have a child though if you want the time off; you have access to the same benefit.
To argue against a benefit because it’s a “lifestyle choice” doesn’t make sense. Everything is a lifestyle choice: getting a pet and grieving it’s death is a choice, having a sick parent that you choose to care for instead of sticking them in a home or hospice, choosing to go skiing and getting injured and getting medical leave, not taking care of your body and getting a disease/cancer etc. Benefits aren’t meant to “reward” behaviors. It offers support in those times when you can’t perform your job fully.
Agree though would like to see other life events qualify for leave/absences as needed.
After 1 year Cherry Bekaert offers paid family leave for up to 12 weeks that covers maternity, paternity, illnesses for self and family/parents. It’s a great benefit!
Deloitte has “family leave” which is exactly this. Usually used for maternity but can be to care for any family member
I believe many firms now have programs to take care of anything family related. Not as ‘generous’ as maternity / paternity. Regardless, talk to your local representative and figure out a way to make our social / family programs more useful.
FMLA covers that, but it's not as extensive as paid maternity leave.
New York paid family leave covers both those things.
Good firms will have leave available for things like that as well.
Yeah it’s called FMLA. Also state programs, private company polices, PTO… doesn’t your company have a handbook?
Look into your state family and medical leaves if not offered by your company.
