Slalom Consulting does using PTO bring down utilization %

"Yes", but it's really just a matter of your utilization being about billing hours. If you're on PTO, you aren't billing hours. Our utilization targets consider the fact that PTO does not count towards billed hours.

Personally, I don't understand why this is a concern. I take plenty of time off and never end up below 90% for the year.

like

At every company I’ve been at it has. PTO is typically not treated as “protected” leave so it would negatively impact util.

like

@AC1 so what is your utilization target?

like

Yes

like

Utilization = billable hours/potential hours. Because you’re not billing, PTO will never be included in the numerator. It’s also not deducted from the denominator. However, paid holidays, jury duty, LOA, unpaid time off, etc are deducted from the denominator. Still, no one at Slalom has a 100% utilization target. The highest target is for C/SC at 85%, so an assumption that you’ll use PTO, take time for professional development, and have some bench time is built in.

like

It’s a sliding scale for bonus - not all or nothing. You’ll get a percentage based on the utilization you hit.

So I had 3 deals scheduled to either close end of May or mid June which were all pushed to end of June/beginning of July. Which is when I have my first vacation planned for over a year (I take 0 time off). My whole family is flying up and we’re renting a cabin near me. What do I do? I’m running one of the deals, semi running the other one and not doing much leading on the other one. Note: I was supposed to not be running any of these. Do I find a back up first or tell the partners first?

But at my new job, my boss asked for a “quick chat” to literally ask me to change the title of a meeting and then chat about christmas. Now that I’m in management, I want to understand it better.
