So I just got into some good programs for a masters in accounting/tax (Villanova, USC, NYU, UNC, and Cornell) After reading a few comments on here I’m wondering if it’s worth it. I already have 150 credits to sit for the CPA I just thought a masters would look good in terms of future advancement. Would it be better to get something in data analytics or maybe an MBA?

In my 6 years nobody said "wow you got a MST at XXX". People will just ask why you haven't gotten your CPA yet. CPA>>>MST Save the money unless it's a full ride and you just want a break from working.

like

If you have the 150 credits and meets the requirements for your CPA license don’t go into a masters program, it’s a waste of money and time. No one in public accounting cares about graduate degrees.

Don’t do an MBA just to do it. Save the MBA for later if you want to switch careers. For examples say you work in public for 3 - 5 years and then you want to switch into IB or consulting, you could go do your MBA at a top school and have a chance are switching careers.

This is good advice

like

That's what I would do in your situation, and maybe further down the line. Also, you don't need a masters if you have your CPA.

like

What would you do in my situation?

like

I would do data analytics. Masters in Tax will help prep for the CPA exam but you can just get Becker and help with that. I don’t see any value in an MBA honestly. You don’t really need an advanced degree if you already have the hours for the CPA.

like

I would get the cpa asap. I wish I had done the cpa exam when I was younger :)

I have a ms in tax from a tier one college. For me personally it helped me get on at the big four AND on to a national tax team. I’d say majority of my colleagues within national tax held a ms in tax.
A lot of my classmates in my ms in tax programs were CPAs with about two years of big four under their belt. They went on to get solid jobs within industry. A few went on to become senior managers probably on track to make partner.

All that to say in your situation my advice would be get the cpa - grind through it. If you have any interest in joining a national tax team then go for the Ms in tax.

You seem like a smart cookie 🍪
If you have any interest in data science or mba type work then skip the cpa just go do that. I know of two CPAs that hated their job and went back for their ms in data science … now do that

Sit the CPA, do MBA or Masters in Data.

Thank you I think that’s what I’m going to do

Villanova has a great MTax program but that’s only helpful if you plan on going into tax. I’d also suggest get a year or two experience before doing the program. It is only helpful in terms of giving you a more rounded knowledge base in regards to tax law. Not sure it would give you any immediate salary bump but will eventually help you progress quicker than your peers without the Masters.

like

Your time and money investment will get more return with your CPA, not the MTax. However, MTax will be helpful if you want to move over to industry, where they sometimes say it’s preferable. Otherwise in PA, MTax isn’t going to do much for your marketability.
