Switching from spamming applications everywhere to tailoring my resume for each one felt tedious at first, but it's made a way bigger difference for me. I usually tweak my professional summary and bullet points to drop in a few keywords straight from the job description. It's wild how much more attention I get back when the resume actually feels custom. Results are always better when you only apply for jobs you legit can see yourself in.
I try to keep a master file with every version I've sent, so if I get ghosted by a company, I can look back for what might've worked or not. Of course, sometimes it just feels like a lottery, especially with those mega-corporations using ATS filters. Tools like ResumeJudge, Jobscan, and Resume Worded are super handy for figuring out if your resume stands a chance with those.
How nitpicky do you get with your changes? Like, do you just swap in some keywords or do you redo the whole format for every single job?
The best way should be still spamming but with tailored applications I think!
Tailoring one's resume can be a good idea, though at some point it's probably pointless. If you write a good resume that honestly presents your experience, that should do fine. As for applying to hundreds of jobs, too many people are "spam applying," and the chance of that working isn't great. Applying to jobs where you're not going to be a good fit just means you get filtered out quickly.
I'm not sure spam applying decreases your chances, how is that possible?

I don't think the time is neccessarily worth it. In some ways, its really just a numbers game. Try to find the balance of tailoring to jobs you're excited about when neccessary, but not spending too much time when you may just get an immediate rejection.
I tailor my professional summary at the top with a few key phrases/words from the job description. The rest has been staying the same. Too soon to tell the results.
Even small tweaks to highlight relevant skills or projects can make a big difference in getting noticed.
In this job market, you have to find the time to do both. You have to get hundreds of applications out, but they also need to be tailored for the specific job.
