Keep it cas. No one wants to hear a new ACD making speeches. It’s about helping them not how they can help you. (Even tho it’s a bit of both in reality.) 🍀
Thank you, that’s good to remember
You’ve never managed people before and you’re becoming an ACD?
Yes juniors. But having major imposter syndrome with this
Use this as chance to hear from them. What they like about the brands, the projects, the extended team and the clients. Listen more than you talk. But don’t make it seem like an interview either. Ask some fun questions too
Thank you so much, that’s very helpful
Mentor
Ask them how their projects are going. What’s going well, what’s not? Is there a type of work they’d like to be doing that they’re not?
I’m junior to you, but when I get to that point, I’ll take the chance to set the tone for my leadership style. If that’s informal/personal then fine, if that’s formal/more rigid, good too.
I’m fond of finding out what their interests/passions are in and out of advertising and then try to leverage that for the sake of the work. People who draw for example might love to create the art for some smaller campaign element. People who love to write screenplays might like to create more short form content. Understanding what drives and excites your team allows you to create opportunities for them to realize those passions and that heart shows.
You also want to be transparent with them about goals for the team and have the team inform those goals. If there’s a simmering need for X, make that part of the goal and involve your team in reaching it.
People respect transparency, that they can always find you to listen and that you’re motivated to help their career and create opportunities for them.
Also… your job is to make them look good, now.
Ask them if there’s anything you can do to help- ask about their mental health, what work they want to do more/less of. Advocate for their careers and follow through for them. You’ve got this!
