Starting to get tax stuff together, as a full-time salaried employee, anyone know if we can write off part of a mortgage/rent if you have a home office and had to WFH during Covid while the work office was closed? Will be asking my accoutant on Mon, but curious...

Short answer: no.

The post-2017 standard deduction will be too big for your itemized write-offs. Thanks, Daddy T.

Nope.

Third this - no

like

Nope - all work from home deductions were removed under #45s tax plan in 2017. It was always about making the rich richer....

like

1. Only if you itemize
2. Only if you only use that room 100% for work

This used to be the case, but Trump's tax reform removed the home office deduction completely.

Thoughts on states taxing student loan forgiveness as income ? I admit I don’t know much about tax law but I feel like it shouldn’t be considered income unless they’re sending out checks to everyone. 10k off the balance of my loan shouldn’t be considered income.

While most teachers are protected by teacher unions, I feel my voice hasn’t been heard at all with my concerns of going back to school next week. Our diocese has decided on full return 5 days/ week for all 42 schools despite a recent increase in COVID in our communities. Every other school that I know of in my state is either choosing remote learning to start the year or a hybrid approach, yet that was not an option for us. Are other Catholic schools I. The same boat? Stay safe!

First gen, first year lawyer here. What do you do when you have family members who expect money from me every paycheck. I try to stand my ground but I get guilt tripped, especially when those family members were there for me.

It’s getting hard to save money when there is this expectation that I must give them money every paycheck. It feels like I have nothing for myself.

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under).
