Stay in an IC role? Or jump to people management?
Goal is to make as much as possible while also being valuable in the market. I feel like the managerial path tends to devalue ones experience as they become less technical over time. Are those feelings valid?

Sales people are often times easier to transition to other opportunities. Sales manager roles aren’t as often available. Sometimes the comp plan for managers is less than ICs for top performers.

First move to leadership is important. Choose wisely but also realize that it's a stepping stone. AE is quick fix payouts and comes with ups and downs.

VP roles come with equity, valuable experience, and upward trajectory in your career.

If you can lead, you should lead....just know your worth and choose wisely.

I would love to move into a management position, but no amount of experience and succes as an IC seems to make up for the fact that I don't have direct management experience, and I've been turned down for interviews solely because of that fact alone.

If you have an opportunity to move into a manager roll, I would suggest that you take and open that door for options down the road. If you don't, then that opportunity many never come along again. This isn't a permanent decision, being a manager won't preclude you from moving back into an IC role if you happen to decide that it's not for you.

I think those concerns are valid. I have seen strong technical people become managers and slowly lose touch with the skills that made them valuable. It depends whether you enjoy leading people as much as the work itself.

Asking for a friend:
My friend received two job offers for Account Executive roles: a Mid-Market role with Confluent and an Enterprise role with ThoughtSpot. He’s conflicted because Confluent is a more established company, ThoughtSpot is Pre-IPO. Confluent is a lucrative product to sell and has established SDR reps so there’s a good blend of inbound and outbound sales. Thoughtspot is more of a startup culture where most of the sales comes from outbound and it’s a tougher sell.

I'm thinking of moving from large cap tech to large cap consultancy firm to help build the resume and round out my experience. I enjoy and do well in licensing, but I'm fairly young in my career (<6 years) and received a great offer to make the move.

Big fan of the org and team I'll be joining as well.

Hello, first post here. Outside sales, merchant services/card processing. I’m primarily a welder but I work 4 10-hour shifts typically then I try sales the last three days. I’ve done it long enough to where I’m confident and comfortable going to new businesses, establishing some rapport with business owners. But it seems like a lot of businesses see this as a waste of time, even adding services and cutting costs. I guess either I’m looking for advice or considering not doing this anymore.

Getting the resume all spiffed up and getting interviews together. When do you make the exit? “When you find a job” I know, but…

Also, would me making my exit to another role that I might leave in a 8 months bite me in the ass down the line? Do I just grab anything in the interim?
