That's exactly what it means. There are still a lot of great things about this country, but at-will employment is not one of them. Or healthcare. Or social safety nets. Or sane politicians, or....where did you say you were from again? What're y'all's views on American immigrants?
Unfortunately, yes, that is exactly what it means. They can literally decide one day they don't like your haircut, and if you are in an at-will state, they can let you go. Now, I will say, most companies still go through a more formal process to protect themselves, but not all the time.
'At-Will' It applies to both the employer (you're fired) and the employee (I quit), without notice. Know what your state is considered.
However, many conditions apply, and it's best to research At-Will. A few reasons:
How ethical is the company or the employee?
Were you on a New Hire assessment review? 30, 60, or 90-day.
What length of time did you work there, under or over a year?
Whether the company wants to pay you unemployment or not.
Here's one situation
If you've worked for the company for a long time and you're simply fired, and they never gave you any type of reprimand, written warning, or mandatory improvement plan. Or, their reason is absurd; you can go to the local State Employment office and file for unemployment. This is irregular.
On the unemployment form, indicate you never had any job performance counseling. The form is sent to the employer, and they either agree, disagree, or ignore the request. If the company is not truthful, you can take it a step further and object, then more paperwork. Often, that type of company won't go any further since they weren't honest, or they don't care if they pay unemployment, and you get unemployment pay.
FYI - When companies downsize and have layoffs, that's 'At-Will,' but you weren't fired. You were laid off, and that's what you write when you file for unemployment, apply for new positions, and tell your friends.
Rising Star
Yes, it’s so crazy especially the times right now with ICE. There are so many immigrants that had to quit or was fired because they didn’t have their paper works. Most of them were here for decades buying this economy. But you can get fired no matter how long you been with the company.

It is scary these days especially with ICE. I have seen a lot of people getting laid off or quiting their jobs due to this fear.
