If they report to you have a 1:1. Then document the discussion in email. If it continues and you ultimately need to take action over it you must have a documentation trail
This is the right approach
Talk in person
Definitely talk in person. This kind of thing will come across as accusatory over email, and you can control the tone and how it's received a lot more in person.
Don't go the email route first! Have the meeting with them 1:1. Then send the email as a confirmation of your conversation.
Document yes, but only after you've given them the opportunity to discuss directly. Otherwise, you'll be perceived as passive aggressive.
Talk in person, it’s tough because I prefer a paper trail so my words are not misunderstood but I also prefer to talk things out so I have the meeting and then send a recap via email
I am sorry to hear that OP. People like that can be so hard to work with and they make our jobs so difficult. I would just keep it formal with an email and have a conversation with them to see why they are treating you the way they are. It might be an uncomfortable conversation but it will be worth it in the end.
