I agree, most of it are just publicity stunts. I believe the market needs strong minority owned firms, what we have right now is just people acting like they care. Until we have minority owned firms that can compete we are going to be always used as props. We also have a problem believing in ourselves. I remember when I moved to the US 3 years ago, a colleague who is also a minority said she just couldn’t imagine working for firm run by black people. It has to start with us to be honest, until we take ourselves seriously and make moves, no one is going to take use seriously.
^this. And all it gives birth to is another cyclical nonsense of imposter syndrome. In all your self-assured confidence you keep asking if you're truly deserving.
^ eh, it’s 2018 and we still have no diversity at the partner level, in a specific EY group. I understand that they are trying but we also need to call out BS when we see it.
I don't think anything will come out of this. But at least they are trying.
Genuine question OP what would you rather they do?
Not sure, but I don’t think holding these events help us at all. All I hear is that we have to learn how to adjust and work hard. In no way am I saying that they have to lower the standards for us to get promoted to the c-suite level. I know of a few SM who were sent South America because it would be easier for them to make Partner there, not here.
If you're at PwC, I can tell you that there are many people in leadership who truly care. But you should understand a few things first. Nobody, no company, and no firm knows exactly what to do to meet or improve their diversity goals and outcomes. So the sincere companies are throwing many solutions at the problem to see what sticks. Secondly, you must realize that diversity is driven at the topmost levels by non-diverse leaders. The Snr Partner at PwC is pushing his leadership team, his partners, and their clients to be accountable for diversity. This means there is risk and investment being taken on personally at those levels. Third, please know that you're where you are for a reason. It makes financial and communal sense for the company, and you deserve to be here. So bring as much of your authentic self as you can. Best of luck!
GT definitely cares. And is taking tangible action. I’m personally involved in it just to make sure I can see first hand and have some say first hand. It’s been interesting hearing perspectives from others (who are not the minority) because it’s new to them but they understand (at least seem to understand) that it’s important given the atmosphere of our country right now. Leadership cares for sure and has implanted a lot of stuff and we’ve got recruiting initiatives. Just looking at the new hires around our office I’m like oh snap ya’ll are for real. So definitely not a publicity stunt on our end. Does it benefit the company overall in popularity, branding and $$$? Yes, and I don’t have a problem with that haha.
