Trying to build my credit from scratch. I moved from Canada to the US, and almost all the credit cards I applied to were not approved because of the lack of a history. What are my choices?

Start with a bank that is open to those without a credit history. My first CC was BofA when I first moved to the US.

like

My first card was from Capital One. I had to put a down payment on it to open it. Probably not the best card but it helped me get approved for all other cards now. Look into cards meant for credit rebuilding and use them wisely in order to move in to better cards.

A few options:
Try opening an AmEx in Canada (use a Canadian address) and then ask to open AmEx
RBC has a US bank and they might look at your Canadian credit history (might also be contingent on having a Canadian RBC account)

like

TD bank in the US can give you a US credit card based on your Canadian credit history, you might need to bank with them

like

If you have a card with Amex in Canada then I think you can transfer eligibility to the US.

I was able to open a Mastercard thru Apple (Morgan Stanley).

As others have mentioned you can also open a secure credit card with Capital One or other providers.

Discover didn’t have any conditions in 2019 when I first opened after moving to usa. Not sure now

like

Petal card -- they'll look at your income and bank statements and won't lean too heavily on your credit history. Designed specifically to help people build credit using a credit card

I think they're verifying income payments, as well as your debit card purchases.

Fwiw I think you eventually do need to directly link bank accounts to pay off the card for most (if not all) credit cards

I handleda very difficult and convoluted succession for a black family. My client was astute and intelligent. We got along great. His family was difficult. Willfully ignorant.

Part of the succession dealt with clawing back $450,000 in insurance proceeds that a niece fraudulent received from the decedent by making herself the beneficiary on policies. A separate attorney was hired to handle that part before I was hired to handle all other matters, including settling a $500,000 debt with the...

I racked up about $20k in credit card debt due to a confluence of things happening at once (move, school expenses , etc ). I have a fair amount of paper assets but not a much free cash. Assets are down a decent amount with the current market cycle and I’d prefer not to sell them to cover the debt , although they easily could. Any suggestions how to handle the credit card debt without racking up tons of ongoing card interest?

Based on the Gross salary offered I have calculated the in hand salary per month would be around 152000 considering 150000 in 80C, 50000 in NPS and 200000 deductions due to home loan interest. Total tax liability is around 400000. Any other options do I have to save tax further (other than HRA, LTA)? Thanks in advance.

Seeking feedback on GAP insurance. I had a family member who purchased a car in June or July. They were in an accident last week and it sounds like the car will be declared a total loss. Never dealt with this before, so wanted to ask if anyone has ever had an instance where the insurance didn't cover the outstanding balance of the loan and the insured then owed money? Car was $35k, $7k down, finance $28k. Gap insurance is through lender, not auto insurer.

I will be moving to Australia from the US in a couple of months. I was wondering what would be the best way for me to transfer the money in the US bank account to Australia? Also what are some of the good banks that allow opening of accounts when the individual is not in Australia? Thank you for the help!
