McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

Even in tech I think if u in tech consulting which is the old CMT its one level below MD and if its Business and tech arch it is two levels below MD
Accenture Levels: Analyst > Consultant > Manager > SM > MD
There is a small set of MBAs who can be SC but that’s not common.
Is there no L8 in S&C that means?
There’s a level called AD (L5) which is available for non-consulting and non-strategy roles, usually for specialists and SMEs. Then there are 4 MD levels after that:
L4-Exec
L3-Sr. Exec
L2-Director
L1-Sr. Managing Director
So as a Deloitte M, I shouldn't be too excited to be interviewing for an Accenture SM. It's not nearly as close to the top as I thought it was.
@IBM1 - Tech consulting I mean so yes level above you would be MD. I don’t know much about business consulting there.
I’ll summarize with this, getting to MD is viewed very similarly as getting the Partner/Principal/MD at EY. It is a huge career milestone, extremely competitive and an aspiration by many. Once you get there there are varying degrees of responsibilities and an internal pecking order (that is not well conveyed to lower levels) as you become more tenured and take on responsibilities of managing the actual practice (or company’s) operations.
