Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Virtual games! Jeopardy and family feud have been faves. Even a quick 30 min lightning round of some trivia.
My team did a two truths and a lie Kahoot where you had to guess the lie of each teammate the quickest
Some of our teams have been having theme meetings like “at the beach” where people dress in Hawaiian shirts or other beach gear and use beach Zoom backgrounds.
We are also using Kahoot to host games. We also have a 15 minute weekly zoom series where different team members will talk about how they are adapting to our core values under present circumstances. Looking into hosting a movie night on our parking lot where team members can socially distance using inflatable screen. We found a group that will host these.
Doing asynchronous storytelling on different topics and themes. People are getting tired of doing things on Zoom fun or not. I’ve seen when you share fun stories based on interests and values and different topics, it’s a great way to engage and connect with one another. It’s actually why we ended up building a feature for it on our app.
Well I don’t want to just sell our tool here, but happy to share more on how our tool works if you’d like for ideas. The challenge with trying to do it in teams is it’s not really engaging and is intermingled with all the work focused chats so it gets easily lost. Creating a separate and fun space for it helped out a ton. And having both default prompts and giving the freedom for others to create prompts that are based around people’s interests, company values, and other relevant topics. So its not just one story to share at a time that everyone has to do and is only coming from HR.
Stories are certainly a powerful tool to leverage for engagement and culture. Googles Project Aristotle study underscored how personal stories creates psych safety which then build more effective teams.
We’ve done Zoom trivia games, cooking demonstrations, and even had a Talent Show via Zoom.
We’ve done some really creative things. We built terrariums, had a virtual wine tasting, sent fair snack food out during rodeo time etc. People mostly had to go pick up the item from the shop we partnered with.
