What are your favorite time entry tips and tricks? I’m going into my second year and I feel like I suck at it. How do you write your entries to maximize your billable time—reading/drafting emails, internals calls, crying about a deadline?

Sadly no, just anxiety 🤣

For emails that I need to review but don’t respond to, I lump them together in one entry per matter: Review email correspondence between xyz regarding 123

like

The reading emails thing! I frequently spend 30+ minutes a day reading emails related to deals that don't need a response,.but I still need to know what's going on.

If they require a response, I just roll the reading time into the entry for responding (either a "draft x" or "research y" entry. But what about just reading?

likehelpful

Or what if I didn’t do any actual work on that client that day but I spend 20 min reading emails back and forth?? I usually say something like “attention to x issue” or “analysis of x issue” or sometimes “develop strategy related to x.” But curious what others do!!

like

"Legal research /analysis" covers a lot of that.

“Receipt and review of” OR “Analyzing” email from [insert person] regarding/discussing [insert issue/subject/topic] to aid with [insert how it moves the needle on the case- settlement discussions, case administration, fourth document production etc.]

Ohh I like “to aid with”

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime.
