It bothers me a little bit but that’s the direction today’s interviews are heading. The key here is as you answer these hypothetical questions you need to find a way to showcase your experience and skills. This is why you need to prepare examples directly related to your experience.
I wouldn’t read too much into it. Sounds like they had a prompt and didn’t deviate from it, maybe because of inexperience or lack of independent hiring authority, but hard to guess.
I do think STAR type questions get at a lot of background & skillset because you end up talking about experiences and the skills you have used or developed in a way that shows instead of tells. I’m personally also interested in motivation and what a person wants (why they’re moving, why they want this job, what they want out of it), and I also like to see how the person communicates and summarizes information in response to different kinds of prompts too. But I wouldn’t judge someone too harshly for using different practices.
It could be that they are assuming you are technically proficient and want to assess your soft skills. I lean more into STAR for experienced candidates where I assume based on work experience they have technical depth or I’ve already had a chance to assess technical depth
I hate STAR. If asked answered right then they will get information about your background and skillset though.
I hate it, too. I've never been asked those types or questions, and the ones asked did not provide any information on my background, and I bombed it miserably. Had we talked about my background, it would've gone a lot better. I hate thinking you can miss an opportunity because of it.
I think only a sociopath could nail a STAR questions only interview.
Good to know I'm sane 🤣
What are STAR questions?
Questions like "Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a co-worker and how you handled it" or "Tell me about a time you made a mistake" questions like that.
