What consulting “common knowledge”/prevailing sentiments do you disagree with?

I’ll start: I don’t think “the best exit, the rest make partner” is true. Among the top performers whether or not they exit seems to be mostly about lifestyle and career wants.

I’ll die on the hill that most people would be better off paying with debit instead of credit cards.

Using credit and loyalty points trigger mental mechanisms that make people spend more than the 1-3% they’d get back on points. And in addition, they’d have better personal financial management. Also against the common legend that fraud protections on debit are worst, all my fraud experiences with debit has me received the money almost instantly.

like

This is an interesting point, do you have research showing this or more of your own theory? Really interested to learn more. My first thought is I would spend the same regardless of which card I use, but as you said it could be I’m just unconscious of the effect of credit card since I use it all the time

Partners can exit to c Suite in industry too. I think you create your own path...there is no one path...and it's all hard.

like

It’s more so the middle ground (all relative of course) make partner. I really believe in that one to be honest. For a true high performer your ceiling is much higher outside of consulting. That being said, if partner track is on the table, it’s the safe way to get to 7 figures.

Or transitioned out.. which is happening to me right now. Not sure the grind was worth it

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.
