What exit ops have you guys heard of from B4 m&a tax as a JD/LLM? I’m an intern right now and I think I’ll likely accept an offer as the work and team has been great, but I don’t think I see myself here past 5 or so years. Any details would be appreciated (comp, WLB, difficulty, etc)

Exit ops are somewhat limited in M&A tax. They are mostly for acquisitive corporates who have in-house deal teams, private equity, and - more recently - R&W insurers (who underwrite insurance on reps and warranties in transaction agreements). Those are the main exit opportunities.

Can also go to broader planning role in house.

With a JD/LLM and some experience doing M&A you may be able to move into Big Law. Had a couple colleagues that were able to do so but came in at a lower level than what they were in the Big 4.

like

Agree, I too have seen the move to Big Law.

I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Is it the case here?

I love international tax (in core) and don’t mind compliance at all but it’s been nearly 100% of what I do. Any ways of balancing out with more structuring/planning?

As a law student interested in going into the field I’ve seen a lot of negative comments saying that only lawyers who couldn’t get into big law go into PA. Although I know most people try to get into big law initially, it is very competitive and many don’t stay past 2-3 years. You certainly don’t make as much going into PA as a lawyer but the pay is certainly not bad and the WLB is generally much better. Can anyone speak to how they got into PA and if you would rather be working in Big Law
