I would tailor my resume to specific opportunities, which means leaving out experience that is not relevant to the role. These experiences are important to you and will likely come in handy, but you don't want to overwhelm a recruiter with limited time and attention - they will always choose the profile that matches the role most closely
Just assume that a HR person will have less than 5 min to screen a resume before passing along to a hiring manager
I personally prefer a range of experiences for my new hires and employees. It makes people more interesting to work with, they have more to draw from in their work experience and I can tell that they can adapt to new situations well. So i always hire people with diverse experience if possible!
It definitely depends on the job. If the diverse experience is related to the same field then I like that better actually.
Yes, my diverse background has all been in the heavy industrial field with a blend of hardware and software. I have been referred to as a unicorn on several occasions and I know I used to hunt unicorns when I was growing my teams as well. I have not been in the job market for 16 years and it just feels like people are now shopping for thoroughbreds instead of hunting unicorns. Thanks for the feedback!
I’m in the same boat here in Denver after spending my ad career in Chicago and LA. I’ve experienced major ageism from Millennials who are lackluster leaders.
