what should you NOT sacrifice in pursuit of FIRE? Here is a simple heuristic. Imagine yourself a billionaire. What would you need and spend time pursuing? Friends, family, adventure, challenge, growth, health, learning? Anything on your list should never be sacrificed on the alter of FIRE.

I would not sacrifice travel. I was hiking Machu Picchu and saw older people really struggling with the steps. That was my come to Jesus moment that I wanted to strike a good balance between retiring early and being able to travel regularly

I think travel. I would rather travel while I’m young, pretty and full of energy than when I’m old

like

True. But I also want to travel to other countries and that would not be as cheap as traveling to somewhere like Florida every year. Don’t eat at 5 star restaurants but I don’t want to stay in hostels or hotels/Airbnb’s I don’t like.

Health, be sure to work out regularly, eat healthy, do the annual medical and dental checkups, no matter how busy you think you are.

I’m moving to a HCOL city. I might not be able to save as much, but I really want the experience while I’m young

Yeah I agree. Thankfully I am still in college mode so I don’t mind a studio the size of a dorm lol

Open Enrollment Q:
Debating between High Deductible (for HSA) & PPO options.
My spouse has some expensive medications. Annual insurance allowed amount is ~$40K for us in 2021. Since we are currently on PPO, we only paid ~$500 out of pocket.
With a high deductible plan, we would pay ~ $7K out of pocket since HD Plan only pays 90% after the deductible. Is there anyone in similar situation? Does enrolling in a high deductible plan for HSA make sense in this case? Anyone in similar situation?

I’m maxing out my 401K, traditional IRA and HSA this year and paying for some house improvements. I have about $750K total investments and very close to $2M net worth, but realize that I am behind on investments if I want to do FIRE.
