Don’t. Don’t do it if you want a life. Don’t do it if you like having holidays off without have to barter and beg. Don’t do it if you don’t want calls at 2am. Pick economics or marketing or just anything but SCM honestly
Honestly, it is burn out speaking. I’ve been in the industry for 5 years. 3/5 we’re running transportation for a seafood company, hence all the late night calls. Now I’ve been with a different company for close to two years, and while better, it’s still haggling for time off.
OP, if you encourage supply chain there are a lot of interesting areas you can get into, but it is easy to feel stuck in one area of SCM, I.e. transportation.
I love my job so I would recommend it to anyone who likes it. Other than that it is a career for the future, as supply chain and logistics professionals equipped with strong technical and analytical skills will be well positioned for impactful, high-growth careers.
Of course, I would recommend it, it is a world with many job opportunities and success, I would invite you to be part of this wonderful place where we make the country work.
Supply chain is great career to get into but it’s all about the industry you’re specifically in. I am specifically in life sciences doing supply chain and it’s very rewarding to know I am helping patients. Also the pay is phenomenal. Anyone can get into supply chain but you need to understand the different sub-areas in supply chain where it can range from data analytics to warehouse operations.
As someone who majored in finance and didn’t know jack shit about supply chain until it was too late to change majors, 100% worth it. I eventually made the jump from public accounting to a complete career reset in retail supply chain, and I have never looked back. As others have mentioned, it is constantly growing and there are new innovations and opportunities around every corner. I think it’s much more exciting and tangible than finance and that’s what I love about it
You have to keep in mind that communication, relationship management and negotiation skills are really essential to coordinate internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure maximum supply chain efficiency.
I would tell you that it is a place for people with discipline and a desire to succeed. If they meet these requirements, they are invited to be part of the most entertaining processes that I have experienced in my life. I am a logistics agent.
Really consider whether or not this is something that you can love. There are plenty of other careers that use similar skillsets and can provide higher income
Yes!
