100 seems low for 1900 hours
Yeah, that’s my inclination but I know insurance defense has low comp, but I didn’t know if it is supposed to be this low
Depends on the market but I would say that’s normal/reasonable, if not high, for my market (Chicago). Don’t know about Bay Area though
I’m not an expert, but maybe seems a touch low for Bay Area. Nothing too crazy though. I know some of the better insurance defense firms in the Midwest start associates at like $80k. Those attorneys are billing insurance companies at rates of like $120/hr.
At a quick glance, $100k in the Bay Area is equivalent to $60k in Chicago or $55k in Miami or Philly. It’s equivalent to $40k where I live in rural BFE. So if you don’t mind being middle-class, as in NATIONAL middle class, then sure I guess.
Low for Bay Area, market for smaller areas
Very low for Bay Area. I’m not in the Bay Area but from CA. I’m currently in the Portland metro area (definitely lower cost than the Bay) and my last job at boutique firm (under 8 attorneys) had an 1800 requirement with a $110k base. I’m a second yr associate. I recently moved to another boutique for lower billables and took a $20k pay cut in my base, but they gave me a $10k signing bonus. Both firms are ID. Good luck!
That’s way low for the area. I was making that in Jacksonville, FL and jumped ship because I know it’s under market for my experience, even here.
Yeah Attorney 3, looking at the difference in billing rates between a first year associate and a partner makes me think that even with years of experience in ID, there’s not as much of a difference as expected in terms of salary
Low for mid-size firms in the Bay Area (not sure about ID in particular though)
I did my first year in ID. Was paid $90k base and $7.5k bonus after hitting 2125 hours. Boss told me not to worry about that 2125 because I’d end up billing way more than that. I didn’t last very long in ID.
What market?
That’s probably average-a little low for central California but Bay Area? Jump.
What’s “junior associate?” 1st year? What kind of insurance defense? Auto will be paid less than med mal for example. 100k base for a first year for 1900 hours of lower to mid end insurance defense, while not ideal, is pretty normal.
$100k is too low for the Bay Area. Negotiate up or keep looking.
