I was once flown to another city for an interview. When I arrived, no one knew I was coming but the HR person. The Creative Director didn’t even know who I was. I spent the day in a conference room waiting while they scrambled to see who could interview me. It was a HUGE waste of my time and it left me feeling like they were doomed for failure if you can’t even keep track of something as simple as a hiring process. That agency went bankrupt and closed two years later. Advice: if something feels bad and/or looks bad, run!
Let’s see...went in to chat with a GCD about a role. GCD had quickly mentioned in passing that he was tired and that his day was looking to be crazy.
Anyway, we continue to his office as he reviews my online portfolio and asks the old/tired question, “tell me about yourself?” So I start to rattle off my answer and within 10 seconds see his eyes start to close. I pause and ask “you alright?” He replies with his eyes still closed that he’s listening and to resume. Feeling a bit weird but want to believe him, I continue on. Then as I’m speaking can now hear him start breathing deeply which was then followed by light snoring. I stop and wonder to myself that this definitely weird. Then think, “am I being plunked?”
I blurt out and say “let’s reschedule, we can chat when it’s a better time.” He wakes up and apologizes profusely and says “please, please ...I’m all ears. Please continue.” Now, I’m debating to myself should I really continue or should I just bail when this a-hole falls asleep again? But ultimately decide to start going over my experience and he gets up from his office chair and now says, “I’ll listen better from down here” as he lays down on his carpeted office floor. I’m dumbstruck to his unprofessionalism and walk out. His assistant sees me walking out and says “that was quick!” And I mention he fell asleep and she apologizes and asks to reschedule. I say whatever and walk out. They called me shortly after but I never reschedule as I believe everything happens for a reason. Find out a bit later that agency had fired him for finally seeing his incompetence. I could of told them that after the few minutes that I saw him snoring.

Clockout!1 You win this thread 😂🤣
A woman I interviewed for a digital strategy role had never heard of a consumer journey and brought in a faded folder with a CD ROM to show her work.
"We don't want people who who are simply WILLING to work nights, weekends and holdays; we look for people who WANT to work nights, weekends and holidays".
When an interviewer at Microsoft found out I was Croatian because I have the language listed on my resume, then started talking about how much she liked a Serbian girl on her team. Including how well she could sing. I was like 'yes, I grew up with a lot of Serbs, been to many weddings and parties and they sing with a lot of vibrato.' Kinda felt like a trap.
@manager1 it does feel good to help out - for Christmas I wired over $150 USD thru Western Union to the fam = 1,000 HR kuna. They were very happy. That money goes far!
This is a true story: when I had my first industry interview, the VP that was doing Phase II (after HR) asked if we could go for lunch across the street at the Cheesecake Factory. A little bit peculiar, but definitely not a red flag. About 20 minutes into the meal he said “hey look I have to get back to the office but I’ll be honest with you, the position is between you and this hot Asian chick. Here’s my credit card, run it back up to HR after you get the bill. I’ll give you a call next week.“ I thought I had zero chance since, well, the decision-maker literally got up and left during the interview. The next week comes, I get a call from said VP, “you got the job. The hot Asian chick went somewhere else. Can you start tomorrow?“
True story.
At an interview, a creative director said “i looked at your book. You’ve done a lot of great stuff and won a lot of awards. Why in the eff would you want to work here?”
We must have interviewed with the same guy. I stammered a bit because on their site they showcased a few recent awards, but then I got back on track with "the opportunity to work on (X account) with a solid team is more important than awards."
I asked an intern what her favorite recent ad was and she said 1-877-KARS4KIDS
Was it OOH outside the York St stop on the F train? I'm trying not to crack up right now.
They couldn’t tell me how they made money.
I haven’t seen a lot of big red flags but once saw a small red flag pinned on someone’s lapel.
She started crying 😳 (I’m not a though interviewer at all)
I asked about their corporate culture and about the teamwork. Interviewer gave me a generic answer, and I said “okay, good to hear the team gets along and works together.” The interviewer quickly says, “oh it’s not everyone who gets along and works together,” followed by a strange smirk. Red flag! However, I was young and naive and accepted this job against my better judgement and hate it
LISTEN TO YOUR INSTINCTS!
Learned that lesson - anyone have any job opportunities??
I was interviewing a girl for receptionist. She proceeded to tell me she didn’t want to be a receptionist, she just applied to it because she didn’t have experience. What she really wanted to do was art. Or copy. Or sales. Or account.or finance. Receptionist was beneath her, but she’d be open to any other job we had available in any department.
^ So do I - my waitressing and pizza delivery years have been critical in terms of dealing with humans, observing and anticipating behavior, and interpersonal communication skills
When I was asked by the guy interviewing me at a small company if I would need to leave to go to lunch -he said “people in our office don’t leave outside of the building because it was a liability issue for his company!” He said people just stay in the office do their work and eat their lunch at their desk! Wow what a way to keep people chained to the desk!
Candidate came in so obviously high as a kite... kept nodding off so I left them for HR to deal with.
Worst thing that happened to me in an interview:
Interviewer: “you will be replacing a 30 year old who is recovering from a stroke cause by work-related stress.”
Jesus
Googled the candidate and realized she was awaiting sentencing for manslaughter. She was high on opiods and took out a family driving the wrong way on the Hutch. I cancelled the interview but was curious as to why she applied since she was going to jail.
I ran into a site searching someone else where it lists all crimes physiologist’s committed. Aka don’t trust your therapist.
Didnt think it was a big problem in ours.
Her wig was on crooked.
An AAE candidate said “I just know I’m going to be very successful.”
"Work life balance is pretty good, I usually leave by 8 or earlier." Hmmm okay.
2nd interview, my future manager was asleep on a couch after working 30+ hours straight.
My first day I was there until 11 pm. That was a "good" day. Somehow, I lasted a year.
For a small local shop,
“When people hear (agency name) I want them to think of us like Droga5. That’s my goal for the next five years”
That was 4 years ago, and today they’re still doing promoted tweets for the local pizza joint. Outrageous overpromises are a huge red flag
