Alvarez & Marsal What’s the culture, pay, work/life balance, and work like in the DI practice at Alvarez & Marsal? A recruiter from the firm reached out recently with openings. Currently an experienced staff at a mid-sized firm with CPA license and wondering if I should make the jump now or wait another year.

It’s a meritocracy with a lot of emphasis on entrepreneurship. We run flat and lean - no bureaucracy, limited hierarchy,

Bonuses are tied to billable hours. So if you’re good/highly utilized, you can make more here than pretty much anywhere else in the industry. But if you’re a low performer or can’t stay utilized, base salaries are spartan.

Work life balance is decent overall, but it’s a consulting firm and forensics. There will be crunch times.

If you’re interested in this kind of work I see no reason why you would wait. A&M is one of the best - if not the best - places for it

More opportunity to take complete ownership of your projects/clients. If you are capable of doing so, it is not uncommon for relatively junior consultants to be serving as project leads and primary points of contact for clients. The firm lets you demonstrate your value and drive your own career accordingly.

Junior levels also have high levels of direct exposure to the client’s C Suite/GC, partners at law firms, and MDs within the practice.

And then while it’s not necessarily expected, the firm definitely emphasizes business development , networking, and relationship building at a very early stage and rewards people for participating in such activities, helping with pitches, or selling work

What are some good practices during the sales phase of a potential project to execute before the contract is signed? Seems obvious but would love some ideas on standard operating procedures that help with seamlessly handing over a signed contract to the account team. For example, speaking to the potential client explicitly about their role in staying on schedule, reviewing scope creep consequences, etc.

Fellow enterprise tech sales fish, I’m interested to hear your perspective. I’ve been in a rut lately and seriously considering leaving sales. I think it’s primarily fueled by one thing:
After a 6 mo cycle I closed a large deal (4x the average deal size) prior to receiving delayed 2022 comp plans. The deal counts as a 2022 deal. On last years comp plan it would’ve paid out at 10%. This year it pays out at a measly 4%.

How do you/have you navigated your way through and out of these situations?

I was wondering if the review course “CPE Self Study Course” for the CFF was enough preparation to study and pass the CFF exam. The CFE review course was enough and like if you get a question wrong it explains it well so that when it comes up in a different way in the real exam you can still get it. But when I saw the outline for the CFF material and there seems to be a lot of topics so I was wondering if the review course was sufficient considering this exam is also multiple choice. Thanks!
