Hiring manager is usually the first interview (after screener) — they likely hand picked your resume. After that comes the panel - at my co that = 3-4 people. Generally the panel will be made of people you’d be working frequently with. Sometimes there is also a final round with your bosses boss.
Getting past the panel is definitely the hardest part — because “fit” is very important and if one person doesn’t like you you’re usually cooked.
Keep in mind your hiring manager usually hand picks the panel, so they likely trust the people they are picking, and group-think is also hard to overcome.
For the last role I hired for we we had 100+ applicants, HR screened about 15, I interviewed 6, 4 went to the panel, the panel only felt good about 1 and they were hired.
this is exactly how it works at my company too
Hiring manager is usually easy. Passing the panel interview is the hard part.
Yeah - it’s not that the person hiring you isn’t the most important - it’s more that they will likely not want to risk hiring you if some on the panel has reservations. A lot of it’s politics - if someone has reservations and you’re hired anyway and then there is a problem it can blow back on the hiring manager.
