For a few years now, I’ve adopted the habit of staying one more night whenever I’ve traveled to. Even if it’s on my own dime. I get a cheap AirBnB or try to crash with a friend.
It sounds small, but you you can squeeze a micro vacation into those 24 hrs. I have done things like:
Spent an entire day at Disney World.
Went to Niagara Falls.
Relaxed on a beach in Malibu.
Partied in Miami.
Ferried over to Granville Island.
It’s probably less viable for people with families. But if you can manage it, I can’t recommend it enough.
The first night I always hang in the hotel room and eat takeout on the bed in the robe while watching awful tv.
Home alone style
Cocaine.
- warm bath if there’s a tub in the hotel room
- am fitness classes at new studios if you’re in a city (not on shoot days but like the morning of tech scout or the PPM or something)
- candidly telling my team i need alone time and reading or like calling my mom or something
+1 always a bath, also a requirement of the hotel I choose. Must have a bath.
Finding the most-expensive restaurant and ordering whatever I want.
Sadly it’s mostly ‘most expensive within the holding company per diem’ but agree that food is the main win.

Flaneuring, reading alone at a bar.
Get stoned and walk around to some main touristic spot nearby to people watch a bit :)

If it’s at the 4seasons (oil money) I’ll fall asleep in the bathtub jacuzzi, eating room service, while watching the tv that’s secretly inside the bathroom mirror.

I meant travel policies mainly. But federal laws too, I guess.

Once I bought gum at the airport and I had to reimburse the holding company $6.
