Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Go on a 30-45 minute walk every morning. Have a dog walker stop by at lunch for another walk. Then walk him at night or take him to a dog park to socialize him and get energy out
The best advice I ever got when I got my puppy was: a tired dog is a good dog. My puppy had to play for at least an hour every morning at the park or she would be a terror during the day. I usually did an hour in the am, a long walk at lunch, then a few short ones throughout the afternoon. It got a little better once she got spayed, and now that she’s 16 months, shes wayyyyy more manageable (but still needs plenty of activity to wear her out!)
Truly—they don’t calm down until about 2 years old. But good news is that they do get calmer with each month. Second all of the excercise suggestions above, but just be prepared as that may not always work to the extent you want it to. Some puppies are just a little insane😅❤️
We got him a little brother & that seems to tire him out. 😂 🐶 💤 🐶
My German Shepherd is the same! He’s almost 5 and has never been a sleep during the day dog. Since working from home at lunch I take him out to play ball. This usually does the trick and he will chill until dad comes home from work. He’s also a daycare 3 days a week.
Exercise is key. My three year old lab still has the energy of a puppy, but he does GREAT after a long walk, a game of fetch, or a day at doggie daycare. Mental stimulation is also important! If you don’t have time in your schedule for longer periods of playtime, give your pup a puzzle toy that will keep him occupied and tire him out mentally.
I take my dog to daycare during the week and she’s 4 😂. Though she is much calmer now depending on the time of year.
Mental stimulating toys are also helpful. When our dog was a puppy we gave her puzzle and Kong wobbler toys to keep her occupied
Regular long walks daily, short but multiple times of tug n war, and short training sessions for mental simulation. You won't believe how 10 mins training tires them out until you try! Also, lots of chewy toys.
My labrador mix was insane when she was a puppy, this schedule made her sleep through most of the days. 😆
Seconding SA1’s point about exercise not working as intended for some pups. At 5 months my Boston terrier mix was like a wind up toy with boundless energy no matter how much we walked him, hiked with him, played with him, trained him, gave him puzzles, etc. (I posted about it here not long ago).
We finally had to start forcing nap times in his crate so he would settle, which thankfully worked great for us. Now at 9 months he’s a lot calmer and we’re working on training to settle out of the crate, which was just about impossible a few months ago. For this I keep a treat pouch on me at all times at home and reward him for calm behavior. Plus our long walks and hikes are now tiring him out enough that he’s not looking for (as much) trouble at night, which is his favorite time to go bananas.
Also: Himalayan yak chews. They last longer than bully sticks and are a bit less expensive (though they can be a bit messy; we only allow them in designated spots).
It definitely gets better, but best of luck in the meantime!
Seconding yak chews! And they last forever!
