When interviewing for a lateral associate position what are some questions I should ask? Not just to fill space but things I should genuinely want answers to for consideration if I eventually receive an offer

Questions about mentorship and training. Ask associates who they work most closely with and how they manage workflow. Ask partners how they staff cases and about pitches.

Path to partner, if that’s a goal.

Also integration process. Critical in wfh world but even if not you want to get off on the right foot and be set up for success.

What sets apart those who’ve been most successful in this role?

like

Feedback and review process. Ask the associates for tips/qualities that help you succeed in the group

like

Mentorship, benefits, pay scale, opportunities to grow, networking ability

like

Ask the associates at your peer level what their actual working hours are like and what the Partners are like. No one is going to outright say that their firm is a sweatshop or the partners are horrendous, so look out for language like: “X partner is demanding but generally fair” or “So and so can be pretty tough but smart” etc. If they actually like the work and the people it should come across clearly and without reservation. Anything else should be a red flag.

Someone messaged me about the interview process for the M&A group at Deloitte and I accidentally ignored it… overall it’s your standard interview process. Few behavioral and a case. Case difficulty depends on interviewer but is usually (based o my understanding) a rather straight forward M&A case with a bit of a strategy twist.

After 3 rounds of interviews (total 4 inc recruiter screen) over the past 5 odd weeks, just got told by a T2 consulting firm that they doesn’t sponsor H1B visas which is frustrating because they were aware of my visa situation right at the start.
