I say a firm number. Like “Thank you for the offer and the benefits package. After reviewing the full offer and benefits, I would like to get to $x. I believe the value I offer blah blah...”
Always ask for like a bit more, like if I wanted $5K more I might say $7K bc they might bring it down.
Yeah it’s def hard to read them if you’re not on a zoom. When I did this a few years ago at an agency, I did it over the phone and after the call sent a follow up email “thanks so much... as we discussed I’d like to see the salary at $x. I believe the value I have to offer blah blah. Please let me know if the hiring team has any questions. I’d love to be able to make a decision soon.”
I’d also put pressure on them by saying over the phone “I am in final stages with another organization but I’d love to work with you guys.”

I never understood the concept of giving a range. Seems like common sense that they would default to the low end.
Be confident and come with a number, plus a short reason about why you arrived at it.
Agree, but I've done it before by adding that it all depends on the compensation package as a whole. I'll take 5k less if I get a bonus or guaranteed annual raise, etc.
I think a set number makes more sense and if it true, I say, “I appreciate the offer and here’s my value and blah blah blah. If you can offer me $X, I’d love to accept the offer today.”
I just want them to know how serious I am and give them insight on how to close the deal. And yes, if they make my number, I’ve always verbally accepted that day....you can’t go back on anything else if they make your number.
