Take two minutes to look at their portfolio and if it looks good ask the recruiter to talk to them. They’re interested enough in the role to proactively reach out to a stranger. Give them a chance.
This.
Be nice.
Earn karma.
It’s easy.
In my experience, people who go through the trouble of seeking out the hiring manager are the ones who want the gig the most. I enjoy chatting with them, and refer them to the appropriate channel if they want to apply formally.
Hell, if you steer them to the recruiter and they work out, you might get a referral bonus.
Is it favoritism if the candidate goes above and beyond in his determination?
Don’t be a dick
I’m def not a dick. I’d be this persons manager and I care very much on making the right decision
If they leave you a message in the connection request, such as “I am interested in XYZ role at your company” I think it’s worth your time to review their profile/portfolio. If they send a generic invite without any context, I’d still look but not give it as much attention. We’re talking 30 seconds versus two minutes as an example.
If you get the sense that they are creeping on you, say I don’t know this person and that will trigger a flag. Hopefully that doesn’t happen, but… Society. I’m a big believer in networking, and sometimes extending the proverbial Olive branch pays off.
Let me clarify my position. I am the hiring manager of this role. Not a recruiter. I’m wondering if accepting invites/chatting/etc shows unreal or false promises, I’d hate to do that someone. We’ve all been there. This isn’t “being a dick” it’s trying to be thoughtful and asking your opinions on the level of connections I, the hiring manager and this future employees manager, should make. Thanks for your help
Thank you, Director 1. Will do
