Pure dissociation and pretending I’m playing a character, but it’s so draining and probably not therapist-approved. 😵💫
I give a wide buffer before doing an interview to distract myself by walking outside or exercising like jumping rope to music. Then a shower. Then open up the LinkedIn pages of the people I'm meeting, the company's page etc. I'd have prepped a week before but I prep closer to it and seeing all these pages right before me helps to ground me for the interview.
During the interview during the initial intro where they ask about background etc, and I think after last year, everyone can empathize, I'll very briefly and lightly touch on some difficulties or make allusions to going through some hard times. I never confess to being depressed of cos. I'd simply say something like it got harder over winter not being able to step out or exercise and the beginning of the year was a huge challenge getting back in shape. Crack a joke about how inept I am despite having WFH for a year and I still can't perform the right sequence of actions for a call 😂
I'm also in my 40s so I have no pretensions about presenting as a bubbly 20-something over caffeinated creative. I see no shame in being human.
A lot of smiling and nodding waiting for the interviewer to talk while I gather my thoughts and response. No harm in erring on the side of politeness so I don't interrupt them.
And tbh by the time it gets into talking about the work, I've eased into it and past the awkwardness. I switch gears cos describing the work and the process leading to the work is quite involving.
Then I'd have established some rapport and hopefully we can riff a bit about work or thinking, find some common grounds and laugh about some stuff.
So it's really the initial hump and first 10 mins to get past IMO.
OP I'd been searching for a new job for three years then the pandemic hit. I was in double depression and interviewed this entire year. I was optimistic this year and interviewing wore me down. I was crying at therapy because it felt like my life and family depended on it.
Some disassociation is true. It's no different from going on a first date or the first day at work.
I signed a job offer last week. You know the cliches.
Interviewing is work and it's a marathon. Sometimes you just gotta take a break from it too. Look after yourself and remember to breathe. ❤️
Spend some time before an interview with some introspection to focus on the moments you were happy and thriving at work. Take yourself back there. Just close your eyes and remember those moments. Ad imagine a bra job could be the first step to you rebounding mentally and emotionally for a fresh start. The fact that you’re even taking initiative to find a new job while depressed is amazing. You’re strong enough to do that, then you’re strong enough to get into the right headspace before an interview to channel the version of yourself you strive to be. You’re depressed but that version of you is in there, fighting to get back out. It’s in you. And you’re amazing
Lemme know if you wanna do a mock interview with me. I can also share my story of depression and how I climbed out recently. Also my recent interviewing experience. DM me. Here for ya!!!! You can do it!’
I feel this, I’ve had an episode right before a major interview and it was just really tough. The first thing you can do is not to be hard on yourself when things like these happen out of your control. I also try to take half an hour before the interview to just unwind a little and focus on prepping for the interview instead of jumping straight into it from whatever I was working on. Hang in there!
You got this! Sometimes we just need a little reminder that we’re all humans before our jobs.
Definitely prep. Reread the description and try to psych yourself up about your future life in that role.
It helps me to write out and practice talking about what I think of as the four universal questions:
Why do you want this job? (Why here? Why now?)
What could you specifically bring to this job?
What examples of projects have you done that prove you can do this job?
What is one example of a time you failed or were faced with a challenge? (Meaning what did you do to prove that you’re tenacious and/or learn from your mistakes.)
Then have three questions prepared for the interviewer.
Good luck!
Do you have to be interviewing now? Might be better to wait u til you are in a better mental state both for the interview process and your ultimate decision making ability.
I’m sorry! Don’t beat yourself up. Maybe these opportunities weren’t meant for you anyways!
Be really kind to yourself! Go in with a positive and realistic attitude and plan some fun things to do for yourself after the interview.
Have you done anything to tackle the root causes in your personal life too? Get ahead on the issues before the next interview?
