Why are companies laying off people and then posting new roles? And how weird/awkward is it if you got laid off from a company and then applied to one of the new roles they posted?

Lol no.

Many of those postings for jobs aren't real either. They're essentially "ghost roles" that won't be filled, but companies need to pretend to be hiring to avoid stock prices tanking and recession fears.

Because this was not well thought out just a move to drive the stock up

And then they give you an excuse that they don’t rehire old employees even in good standing …Pomeroy does that…

smart

Dunno… all I know is that they bought Tolt Solutions downsized and evaporated it and told all laid off employees that they were ineligible for rehire under Pomeroy… ridiculous isn’t it?

I heard from a recruiter that MS got rid of many of their UX positions and then reposted the jobs at a lower pay scale. apparently many decided to take the lower pay rather than be unemployed. That’s all I heard…

I’ve also seen firms do this. Hire ppl on lower rate contracts

In addition to what other things folks said here, because people were hired at 2021 salaries before companies had to care about showing their profit margins.

My guess, outsourcing to other countries for cheaper labor offering remote work

Trying to force remote workers back into the office.

Looking for respectful ways to manage helping people in need of a job or seeking mentorship. I get 3-4 requests a week from mutual contacts asking if I can connect with a former colleague (always broad). Typically the ask is a 30-45 min call. I’ve been laid off, I know how hard a time it is, but equally am working long hours, parenting and want to reserve time for those I know. How do others manage these extra calls into their weeks?

I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I’m in interviews with a few companies. It was initially to see what was out there to negotiate my pay. Now, I’m seriously considering leaving my current company because of what one of the prospect companies represent: everything I want in a company/role. (Plus they reached out to me) AND they will pay me almost double what I’m currently making annually, put me in a position to advance (so many options!!!!!) and allow me to move/travel when I get ready to.

What should I do? Guidance please!!!
