SaaS companies like people who have SaaS experience. When I was recruiting SaaS salespeople my hiring managers only wanted to talk to people that had experience selling SaaS solutions.
Are there other experiences that might work? I think so but a lot of times us recruiters are going based on what our hiring managers are looking for. There's only so much influencing we can do.
If applying for roles isn't working, try networking with salespeople at the companies you're interested in. They will be able to give you insight and tips and possibly referrals.

Are there specific traits that are being looked for in these Saas candidates? Or just that prior experience?
It IS the most difficult job in the world. That's why. If you took the job tomorrow, how many (prospect) executives with whom you have a solid relationship would take a meeting with you over the next 90 days? How many partners (VARs, Big 4 SIs, MSPs, etc.) would take you in to meet with their customers? Go up to the whiteboard and describe your end-to-end sales process. How would you leverage the members of their Board of Directors and Advisory Board? Prove that you've done all these things in the past and, as a result, prove that you've been a top producer in every job you've ever held. There are people out there who can nail each of these questions/requirements. That's what you're up against.
