Will you take 30% pay cut to allow permanent remote if your current job is 5 days in office

I recently went through something similar and I used chatGPT to help me determine if it was the right move. I asked it to calculate the average cost of commuting (gas, tolls, car maintenance, coffee, lunches, etc) over a year to see how much of my salary was going towards commuting. I gave it my current salary, expected salary. I compared benefits. And got a complete picture of the differences. I ultimately chose to leave. I’ve been at my remote job for a month and it was definitely the right move for me. If you can afford it and it makes sense for your lifestyle/career aspirations, I would seriously consider it. I do not, for even one minute, miss being in the office.

Don't forget that you might be dropped to a lower tax bracket.

I would entertain a 10% to 15% reduction with in reason and acceptable accommodations with supplies and needed items. and they benefits better be spectacular. many states and businesses have been doing remote or part time remote for years and natural disasters.

BESIDES THE COMPANY IS PAYING ME. FOR MY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE. NOT WHERE I SIT and do my job.

besides they don't pay my gas back and forth they don't pay the maintenance on my vechile. that is less overhead spending for me and the company.

lastly some people are not made for remote work. for me as a service connected VETERAN, it is better for me to at least mostly work from home. maybe 5 days a month on site.

any company I work for could do split work force and us the money and the space to expand other areas

like

Absolutely not. If the level of value you provide to the company remains the same, whether in office or remote, compensation should not change either. If you are looking for remote work, then I recommend either working it out with your employer or remain patient until you find a respectful organization who supports remote work and compensates fairly.

like

Absolutely not! 0% pay cut! My value lies in my knowledge and my results, not my physical presence in the office. Additionally, I will have increased expenses for electricity and heating at home, for which I should be reimbursed, but this would be offset by the reduced transportation costs.

like

Depends on. Maybe assess the following:
1) your financial situation.
2) Do you have young children that you will need to be close to home?
3) Do you need to improve overall health - i.e. mental health improvements, more oppty to go to the gym.
4) Will this help with work/life balance?
5) What decision gives you peace in your heart?
6) What feels right?

Good luck with your decision. You probably know the answer, but wanted to validate by have feedback.

like

This seems weird…. does your contract actually pay for your travel expenses, car maintenance etc? Do you get to work at the time youre contracted to start working?

If yes then it makes sense

Else it‘s completely insane.

like

Simple answer no... If your in a global role it shouldn't matter where you work only that your there when your needed

like

Absolutely would not take a paycut period for remote work. I have done it for about 18 years. Reasoning ? I don’t commute therefore the company is getting extra time from me in the mornings. Extra time in the evenings because I don’t have a commute home. I take shorted lunch break as I don’t have to go anywhere for lunch. This extra time given to the company. It does also allow me a better work life balance as I can do some things In shorter amount of time as I dont have to commute home and then go take someone to Doctor. just better for me and the company , but no reason to take a pay cut!

like

Well, I'm currently FT remote and I wouldn't go FT in person for a 42% pay increase (inverse of a 30% pay cut). But my commute would be terrible (~3-4hr per day). If my commute was ~1hr per day then yes I'd do it. It's not a matter of whether it is worth my time or not, rather if it is physically possible to keep up that kind of commute.

But, let's assume my commute would be about 1hr per day. Then yes I'd do it, and I think it's OK to be paid more for working in the office, because you have more expenses (commuting, clothing) and it takes you more time (commuting) and it is less convenient (e.g. home maintenance visits).

like

Absolutely not. Why would anyone ever consider such a thing.
Supporting work@home knowledge workers is less costly for corporations than providing them with dedicated office space.

like

No - I was hired during Covid with the salary & expectation of a Remote role. This was likely the case for many people in the workforce today. Contrary to this question - why shouldn't people get an increase of 30% to come in 5 days a week as companies ask employees to change their work environment after what they were originally hired for.

like

Work remote 100% and have lots of flexibility / few calls at certain times of the day due to time zone differences and working with a global team. It would be hard to trade that for a 30% pay increase unless it's a short commute (walk/public transit within 30-45 mins).

like

Definitely, I can work from anywhere, any country. I can do salary arbitrage.

like

Unless of course a person has a family that can't just uproot and go wherever.

No. I would take a pay cut and demotion if my job was 100% remote :)

like

I’m sure the power and water companies would understand if I cut 30% from the bill. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

smart

Absolutely not, unless the work only takes me a couple hours per day to do, in which case I'd just take the 30% cut and get another full time job.

smart

How far is the current commute each way? Any restriction to the remote location (work really from anywhere)?

Nope, a pay cut is a pay cut no matter how you try to spin hcol vs lcol. You still lose purchasing power along with the ability to save more.

No way

Not 30% but surely with 20%.
