Med school
I've thought about it a few times. Still do. Post-bacc pre-med program. Takes about 2 years if you've never done science classes. Then maybe a glide year to do research. Then 4 years of med school. Then residency which is 3-5 years (but you get paid). If you're under 30, I say it's still worth it (as long as you figure out how to pay your bills)
From dating a med student now a resident, I can tell you your stress levels will be much higher (lots of depression among students). If you're on the fence, you shouldn't do med school.
OP, I was premed in college and have been battling consulting vs med school for 3 years now. Ive also contemplated all sorts of other healthcare careers like getting an MPH, masters in bioinformatics, PhD in epidemiology, etc. I could never commit to med school since I have all these other interests, as well as the opportunity cost. Same opportunity cost argument for the PhD but that's something I can see myself doing when I'm financially independent and leave consulting in the future. Now I'm at a crossroads between two paths: stay in consulting and get involved with healthcare digital projects or learn code in my free time and work on bioinformatics open source projects online to build my portfolio then do it full time.
Also, I thought maybe that switch would be really drastic and found something OL about bioinformatics, thought it was super cool since it involves big data, anyone ever had any projects related to something in that area?
^ totally agree with A2. From a family of physicians. If you're not passionate you're not going to make it. It's a very long road to a meaningful career.
I have a friend who recently decided she wants to move from coding to medicine. She's kicking off a year of school to get all her prereqs and then applying to med school. I admire/pity her.
