Would you change jobs because of bad tech? My current firm is still using a server setup that feels like it’s powered by a hamster wheel, and doing basic document assembly takes three times longer than it should. I am actively losing billable time and losing my mind because the partners refuse to invest in modern practice management software.

Partners care about money. Run the numbers and show them how it will actually result in better utilization, and therefore revenue, if you aren't wasting time on non-billable tech bs. The software should pay for itself. Also you can usually get a discount by pitching a few providers against each other to get your business.

Not sure I would change jobs, but I could understand why some would. My office's computers are eleven years old, 8gb memory, and so slow at this point that it takes me probably three times as long to do my work as it should. It raises my blood pressure when the workstation lags. Luckily the office is supposedly being upgraded with all new workstations this summer. If that doesn't happen, that may push me more toward leaving.

My first firm was like this and it was terrible.
Imagine my surprise when I went to a large firm in my area and found they had a whole department dedicated to Word Processing lol. If it’s really driving you that crazy and the partners turn a deaf ear to the issue, might as well move on. You’ll do more interesting work at a more capable firm anyway…companies are only giving basic work to slow firms anyway.

If this is due to the partners guarding their clients and work, take it as a red flag.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
