Ask yourself this - When was the last time you hear anyone say "God Im so glad I got away from San Diego"?
Now when was the last time someone said "God Im so glad I got away from Vegas"?

I hear you. Remember, real estate is absolutely driven by supply and demand. The reason San Diego is expensive is because its desirable. And its one of the rare combinations of both great weather and some high paying jobs. Compare that to Vegas where you actually pay relatively high prices to live in the middle of a desert because the jobs are both low skill and high wage.
I take living with friends (let alone best friends) always over living alone.
Do it! One year will go by so fast anyway! If you don't love it or like it, you can move back after one year and go right back to San Diego but at least you would have treated yourself to a new experience that really may contribute to your personal and financial growth!
Your rent will get raised anyway, better to save up for a home
No amount of $ could convince me to move to vegas

It's very hot--you won't spend time outside much of the year during the "hairdryer hot" months, which are so-named because you can blast yourself in the face with a hairdryer on hot and it's about the same!

If your currently renting then I don’t see the risk. If you don’t like it you can move back in a year. Now if you own then you would risk the market fluctuation in a year could increase and lead to paying more in a year. But if you do in fact own I would still consider doing it but just wouldn’t sell whatever you own if you think you want to move back in a year

Do you have a long term lease? If not upon renewal your rent will go up if the market rate increases. It is common for rents to increase upon renewal so if you stay your rent will likely increase.

YOLO! Do It!
Do it! The savings you get from moving there can help with the increased rent you MIGHT have to pay when you get back, and I’m thinking the change of scenery will be a great experience and alleviate some of the stressors you have right now. And nowadays its so easy to stay connected with the people that you want to be connected with and if the vibes are still different after just a year, you don’t need em!
DOOOO IT
the regret of not trying it out due to fear of the unknown will be worse
How old are you? If you’re young, do it. If you’re older and want to meet someone still, don’t go to vegas
Do it. Find a hot stripper just don’t knock her up
I did the math and I could save:
- 12k just by having the Nevada address
- 6-9.6k by sharing a house with friends ($500-$800 a month rent savings)
- 30k in my usual yearly savings, and possibly push myself to go beyond that number if I put my car on Turo (we won’t need 5 cars all the time since we work remotely)
I also stand to have better emotional and physical health by having friends around who are more active than I am.
At minimum we’re looking at 48k in savings. My investment account would like that! But still would be nowhere close to affording a down payment on a home or condo in SD.
If it’s just for the money, I get it and it makes sense. Words of warning though, I lived in Vegas for 20 years. It’s incredibly easy to let the vices there take over your life, if you’re not careful. So if you have any personal demons or issues with dependencies, chemical or otherwise, it’s a dangerous place to get too comfortable in, because a lot of people won’t prevent you from screwing up your life if it benefits them financially. I say all that from hard won experience.
I lived in Southern California for a long time. I didn’t want to leave either because honestly there is no better place. The weather is perfect, beach, great Mexican food, etc.
But honestly, life feels way more abundant once you leave that state. All of the sudden you have more everything. You have more money, better living space, etc. It’s worth it.
Yeah you’re doing fine. I might go back with $500k income. I’m sole bread winner on about $250k TC. Moved to Denver.
Forget the calculations and endless analysis, what does your gut say?
Personally, I would do it in a heartbeat, but that’s me!
YOLO
I’m looking for a place in San Diego.. perhaps we can work out a temporary sub lease agreement. ?
I would entertain that idea, including furniture too if you need. Are you local? I live in a 500ish sqft tiny home (have my own four walls) on arguably the best block in North Park with a small shared backyard space that has a seating area, garden, and fire pit. It technically has a bedroom that I’ve blocked off with some curtains (no door though). The place is newly renovated as of 2021. Has everything you need (minus a dishwasher) lol
If there’s three of you’d I’d venture a guess that 1/3 of you will develop a gambling problem, and it makes it more likely to take the other ones down with them. If any of you have even a slightly addictive personality, then don’t do it. I say this as a person who loves Vegas and it’s one of my favorite vacation places.
Otherwise definitely do it.

Do you know how hot it gets in Vegas during the summer?? Oh, and the fact that they have scorpions that get into the house. From SD to Vegas, that’s a hard no. If you can sublet your apt in SD then do it. But to give that up you will not be able to come back to that rate in rent. And the flight is 1 hour from SD to vegas so you can go whenever.
I live in LA and would not do it. Give up the beach, mountains, and so much to do for a glorified sandbox that regularly hits triple digits in the summer and gets cold enough in the winter for snow? No thank you.
I think I’d only consider if I could afford to live solo just in case something doesn’t work out with the roommates.
Once you leave a HCOL it is really hard to go back. Hard to demand the HCOL salary bump, hard to deal with the bs that comes w the area (eg traffic or small home size etc). Be careful— if you want to return to SD, consider not leaving in the first place.
Yeah except if you have family or just a general passion for the area (like how new yorkers love new york no matter how nonsensical it is) all that reasoning goes wonky.
