After high school or college it’s like: you graduate, get a job, start chasing money, pay bills like it’s a subscription you never signed up for, try to enjoy life on weekends, maybe sneak in a vacation if your bank account forgives you… then you rest, reconnect with family, and repeat the cycle again.

But then the real question sneaks in like: “Okay… and then what?” 😅

Find joy in the mundane. Insert fun into your day to day. This is life. Enjoy life.

If you're lucky and play your cards right, you'll find a career that is at least mildly fulfilling to you, and work with good people, and make a decent salary. I think it's so important to evaluate your priorities and try to stay aligned with them. For me, it was deciding I didn't care about partner-track in favor of a reduced schedule that has given me more time with my kids. It's been staying in a smaller house so we're not house poor and can afford things that are more important to us like good schools and annual vacations. You need to live your life now. Tomorrow is not promised. And you can't take money and titles with you.

I grew up when life advice came in the form of Squidward telling SpongeBob: "I order the food, you cook the food, the customer gets the food. We do that for forty years and then we die."

Squidward clearly couldn't afford a retirement plan. But I don't live for that, I live for the quiet moments and seeing a nice sunset every now and then. I live for laughs with my SO doing those mundane things.

I live for being healthy enough to take a walk around the block.

Don't live for the weekend, don't live for vacation, don't live for retirement and don't live to work.

You work to live, so live life and look forward to it. Even if that life is mundane existence.

I've had that exact feeling. But really I think at that point we're just asking what the meaning of life is.

Let me know if you figure it out.

In the meantime, I guess I've just been trying new things out, getting out more, challenging myself to socialize and meet new people. I'd like my job to fund my life, not be my life, so that's what I'm trying.

FIRE. You are selling your time for money: Leverage that money to assure fiscal autonomy. Then, navel gaze, ponder existence, do whatever you want, etc.

You’ve got to find joy and excitement in the day to day and enjoy the journey. Or you need to have a vision for something bigger in your life that you’re actively working to achieve. Ideally it’s both.

Spouse, family, kids. Finding what in this life truly matters to you.

hiya fishes. happy friday! sorry if this isnt the right bowl, but this is in regards to vacation time. i have an interview process starting next week, and wondering when it would be good to mention i would be OOO between the middle of the month in september? its for a week. im unsure if i can twist this to have a start date once im back. going back and forth on being transparent vs. mentioning it later on. thoughts?

Starting a new job next month, and considering taking two days off for kids’ spring break next month. Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). I may just be able to just ask for a single Friday off (so 1 day rather than 2 days).

Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.

How much PTO can I cash out when leaving for school? All of it or is there a cap?

I accepted a new job, they said PTO was “generous.” I find out it’s 19 days a year of PTO (which includes sick days). I have two young children and we like to vacation 1-2x a year (no more than a few days away each time). Am I crazy that this is pretty limited time off? 8 of the normal holidays off during the year (working the week between Christmas and NYE). Thoughts? I dont know if lack of PTO is a good reason to back out, is it?

Reminder to everyone: use your 2021 vacation time. Don’t let it pass you by just because you’re not traveling. Take a long weekend once a month to nap and eat chips in sweat pants all day. We all need to do our part to normalize self care, and sitting at home doing “nothing” is just as worthy of a vacation day as pina coladas on the beach.
