I have an initial recruiter phone interview with Square Thursday. Is it it just a phone call or is it a video call and they didn’t specify. If it’s a video call what’s the dress code like? I’m coming from consulting so all my interviews were in suits. Any tips to get past the recruiter phone screen?

Red flag. If the layoffs were non-performance based then they're clearly still ok with the organizational bottlenecks that got them to where they are.
They were 100% not performances based
Riffs are common at big companies. This happens in banking to rest wages at the lower end of pay ranges. I imagine since to job market has soften, they just want to bring wages down. Massive pay gaps between the current & new hires creates conflicts that affect morale. How loyal are you going to be to firm that treats you like this. So there is moral hazard in re-hiring. This makes no sense for either party, unless they give you more than you were making before & show you some respect.
Yeah, that's ridiculous. Especially since you'd be interviewing with your former managers. You know they'll end up hiring you, so why are they making you jump through all these hoops first?
Just seems like the kind of time wasting decisions that led to lay offs in the first place
I get that it's annoying, but it could actually be a good thing in a way. Provided you were a good employee, this is likely just a technicality and you'll end up getting hired back, but it gives them the opportunity to weed out the ones who were poor performers, which is good for everyone.
Im pretty sure companies are required by law to interview everyone who is laid off when they apply to another position within the same company. I have to do this all the time and it is such a waste of time, however, my senior managers make me interview everyone that applies back after being laid off.
You are not the one being stupid in this situation. How would you feel if you were rejected in an interview process after being laid off by the *same* company? Yuck. You can do better.
Why work there again for a potential future layoff ?
Complete waste of time. Wouldn't even bother with that company myself, likely to get laid again very quickly.
Since you worked there before and were successful, I would call the VP of sales, explain what your being asked to do and tell him/her you would like to be judged on your past performance. Have numbers that you can point to as why you feel that way. Emphasize your call to him/her as proof of why they should hire you back. See what happens. Otherwise either look for a new company or continue within the process.
They did so to offer you a lower salary that's why.
