One more issue when buying from rental companies is - if the car has been involved in any accident they repair it in their own shop and it won’t show up on carfax
I personally wouldn't - I've rented a few 4runners from Avis/Hertz in the past and they all seemed to drive very "different" from each other. I think a lot of them were due to alignment or other small things, but kinda tells you how hard of a life they had.
It's a Toyota so I doubt you'll have major issues even with their lack of maintenance, but it's still a 40k car from Hertz...so it's not exactly dirt cheap for the additional risk.
Where I live, the rental fleet is almost entirely Grand Cherokees, and their wear and tear is crazy. As I rent them so frequently, I’ve made friends with the entire crew at the local storefront, and they told me how quickly they go through those SUVs because of all the abuse from customers. Not saying you won’t be able to find a good example, but it would be tough.
I haven't bought a car from a rental company before but having your mechanic or an auto inspector check it out beforehand is a wise decision. Also, don't assume because it's a rental company that all the required maintenance is done they definitely skip or delay maintenance if they have customers lined up to rent. Definitely have your mechanic look for collision repairs too.
Appreciate it, sort of confirming my thoughts on it. I also see 2024s at the dealership used with >20k miles on them which has me wondering if they are buying back off auction because that’s crazy mileage for latest models.
I am looking for a CPO myself and through my research found something interesting. Many of the CPO vehicles at dealers are prior rentals and bought from Hertz or Enterprise. Look for the window sticker available in the Carfax reports.
Then why not buy directly from Hertz. Get the Hertz certified ones for extra peace of mind
Yeah definitely check the Carfax of any car - it should say if it was a fleet or rental car.
Now that I think about it, kinda makes sense why the "lightly" used market for 4runners are so thin. They don't lease particularly well and lease returns are the primary source of CPO cars...think about how cheap and plentiful 3-4 year old BMW, Mercedes, etc there are.
I'd also imagine people who buy higher trim 4runners wanted that exact car so they are more likely to keep it longer, especially given it's reputation for durability.
