As someone who audits local governments, I'd say there are definitely perks. The work life balance "CAN" be better, but doesn't always mean it will be. If you walk into a clusterfrick, you will be worked. I've seen people at governments worked similar hours to my Big4 days (at least while they were cleaning it up and learning governmental accounting which is very very different).
You will often work with the older generation, which to me would be boring and dry. I have also seen some clients with administrators/board/clerks who all hate each other because they're elected in. However, I have also seen some towns, townships, and schools with amazing atmospheres. This leaves potential for great work life balance. If you step into a clean role with leaders who can teach you, I guarantee it's not more than 35hrs a week tbh.
Finally, most governmental jobs have very good benefits and often decent pay (of course depending on the tax base, area, etc.). For perspective, I spent a couple years at EY, and a few at a regional firm, but I think my ultimate goal is to be one of these government finance directors/business managers.
You lost me at clusterfrick
The focus is on pension and retirement with this kind of job. good luck
