You think you’ve seen drama? Just wait until you make partner and get to go through end of year maneuvering for points and partner bonus allocation etc. You ain’t seen nothing yet!
I feel like there’s a juicy backstory here . . .
Rising Star
Who doesn’t deal with office drama? If there are people involved, there will be drama. In my experience, office managers who play favorites with partners never survive because partners come and go and the partner snubbed last week is the huge rainmaker this week. I see many office managers treat associates badly assuming associates don’t stick around and have no power. It is very unlikely you will be fired for sticking up for yourself to an office administrator, although your life may be uncomfortable for awhile.
Office manager is a tough job. Very hard to keep everyone happy. Our Firm culture requires that all our employees, attorneys and staff treat one another with respect. Violations are just not tolerated. Office managers often find themselves in the middle. Our office manager is excellent. If I (the managing partner in the office) have a concern with how she handled a situation, we talk about it. Have you discussed the situation with the office manager? And in a non-confrontational way? If that does not help, you should be able to discuss it with a partner without being concerned that raising the topic will gave adverse consequences. If your firm does not operate that way, consider looking for a new firm.
Deal with this daily at my firm. We have paralegals that think they run the show and unfortunately, the managing partners allow it. If you're on her shit list, watch out. I speak up and get chastised. Thankfully, my direct department head is amazing so I keep to my department and try my hardest to stay out of theirs. Office drama is such a headache.
Seems to be part of their job description
Yeah I definitely feel this. In the past for me, it just wasn’t worth the effort of speaking up. Especially bc the OM was the worst when I was first starting out. I was told very early on to get everything in writing & that has been very helpful. I also feel as time goes on and I’ve learned the firm politics -the OM pulls less crap now. I have really spoken up when it had to do with my assistant. But I’ve always been better about speaking up for others than speaking up for myself.
One of the partners at my firm treats me like a child. I just rolled with it for a while until she called me into her office to ask me to justify time I billed to a different partner’s client/matter. Then I spoke up, and I got a few phone calls from other partners asking me not to quit. Things have generally been much better since I said something. It wasn’t the same kind of “office drama,” but sometimes you have to stand up for yourself.
Yep 😁
I was in this situation once. I was able to bond with this person over personal interests. Yes it was playing office politics but it was worth it.
