I’ve noticed the bm/bw dynamic. In predominantly white environments, Black men become men first. They become close comrades with fellow men (non-black men) before or as priority to fellow black folk (black women). It’s pretty common and I’ve talked about it with black men. Consciously or unconsciously, they are trying to level up. There’s also some jealously with the attn/resources bw get from women’s diversity efforts. Not worth mentioning outright but good to be aware of. I keep my expectations with bm at work low and have to be proactive and explicit with them if I want to start a working relationship.
Wow. That’s terrible. I definitely wouldn’t be silent about it. Me personally, i don’t like talking to other people anyway, especially THEM but technically these are considered microaggressions. Document clearly (avoid feelings, just state objective facts) and take this to your manager first. You will want to include why this is problematic (microaggressions can have a severe impact on one’s mental health and even work productivity). If it can’t be resolved then maybe go to HR and if nothing still happens leave. There’s ZERO reason to be anywhere where you are shunned and not embraced. That’s toxic and WE and our mental health deserves better.
I don’t think it’s worth bringing it up - you may ended being the victim of reprisal. My advise would be to accept that at the culture of that organization and find an organization with a more real inclusive culture. Change rarely happens in my experience instead you may draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Remember you would be practically implying people you work with are racist….. not going to be taken well regardless how you spin it!
Thanks for the feedback yea I was just curious if anyone else noticed this dynamic mind you I worked for two startups but....yea I won't be saying anything because qt my job they don't care lol. They fire anyone who speaks up and that includes white people lol. It's just sad. But I'll dry my tears on my vacation that I can afford hahaha
I've not noticed this, but I tend directly interrogate and consider culture before I join an organization.
I’ve noticed the same at my PE firm
