I diversify my investments:
1. Strippers
2. Booze
3. Other substances
I don't know about the ROI of that portfolio, but I'm having a great time.
You can manage your investments for like 30 minutes and be up over 20% in this market.
No one ever got rich off a 401K. I've started investing in Bitcoin
If the alternative would be spending that money then absolutely. I️ max out both and spend a decent amount of time managing my investments, and I’m up over 20% this year. Not as exciting as bitcoin but definitely a lot more stable.
OP - yes. Hit the full match in your 401k, then hit your IRA, and then go back to 401k
I agree with D1. Scared money don't make money.
In my opinion, your age matters quite a bit. If you are on the younger side, then I’d be more aggressive with your speculation.
Of course, it’s always easy to tell others how to spend their money, so take everyone’s advice with a grain of salt
It is definitely not a no brainer. I shall tell a story. One year ago I had my money in the S&P 500 and made a small return in a good market (10% or so). If I had put my money in a riskier place, Bitcoin which I knew of at the time, I would’ve made a 1000%+ return by now. Moral of the story is that when you are young you can take those risky investments knowing that you really don’t have much to lose. I would contribute to the 401k up to whatever the company matches, and then put anything additional into something that could actually get you the return you need. Take risk, be aggressive. Traditional investment advice is for people who already have so much in the bank that they can’t afford to lose it all with a risky bet
EY1 anecdotally, yes your story makes sense. However, law of averages on risky bets is generally against your advice. I absolutely regret not investing in bitcoin earlier, but traditional investment advice is for everyone not just those with money to lose. @OP - if you’re below the income limit for a Roth IRA, it’s a solid tax option. (Or you could put it all on black and get higher ROI)
