I remember hearing all the writers laughing and hanging out while I was sweating it out getting their copy into the layout. The buck always stops with the AD.
People thinking you’re a copyright lawyer when you introduce yourself at parties. This can be a good or a bad thing.
no more ad vs cw posts please 😭
I think ADs have a harder job, frankly. I’ve seen ADs constantly keeping up with new updates on programs. Learning In Design. Photoshop. Figma. On and on and on. Plus, they typically put more hours in. They should be earning more $$$ and I salute them. As for writers—as long as they don’t change QWERTY, we’re good.
Depends on the medium. Obviously, radio doesn’t require an AD at all. Web design is usually a specialized skill where a designer does most of the heavy lifting. Increasingly, making decks for video scripts is so easy with Midjourney, you don’t really need an AD. Then the production team does the storyboard and they provide their own art directors for the set design and there’s a DoP, so any creative with a decent eye can oversee all that and you really only need an AD to set the end super. These days ADs are mostly needed for creating social posts and static assets, and then overseeing the studio when the assets get resized.
In my experience more clients and account people try their hand at a little copywriting than art direction. So less respect for the craft…

It’s not about respect for the craft. It’s about the time investment needed in order to learn the tools to design a thing. Everyone can read & write. The mistake clients/account folks make is thinking this basic skill gives them the ability to write copy.

I’ve worked as both. Started as Art Director. I’ve veered into writing as freelance. I’m good at both. I’ve won awards in both roles. Writing (as long as you have the talent for it) is much easier, in terms of how much work you have to put in.
