After you’ve accepted your new offer and passed the new firm’s conflicts checks if that applies. I wouldn’t say a word before you have a new job in hand and are them giving your two weeks’ notice
No doubt this is the correct move. And I just left a firm pre-Cooley with very close friends and partners. It’s business. Don’t lose sight of that.
Don’t count your chickens until your eggs are hatched.
My last firm was similar - small firm, certain partners taking people leaving as personal affronts, etc. There is no possible way that you can mitigate their response. Like Inhouse 1 said, have an accepted offer and passed conflicts. Your reason for leaving cannot be mitigated by your current firm to get you to stay, so there's no point in going to them with your offer and seeing if they will match/beat, because no matter what you're moving to be close to S/O. If there's nothing they can do to make you stay, there's no reason to give them advance notice.
For color, when I put in my 2 weeks, I said 2 weeks on Monday and I was happy to give them more if they need me for longer to wrap up/transition matters/give people time to get up to speed. Managing partner told me he didn't see any reason for me to stay past Friday unless it was impossible for me to wrap up/transition everything by then. He barely talked to me the rest of the week. As soon as they see you as no longer part of the "family," you're dead to them. Make sure you have your landing set before you let them know, cause as soon as the words are out of your mouth they're going to get you out the door as soon as possible.
