From my experience working in Head Start programs family style meals were done as followed: all the food is served in bowls along with large serving spoons for children to actually serve themselves. As far as milk it was placed in small serving pitcher for the child to actually pour the milk themselves. The only down side was that as a Teacher you really had to guide them because other children might not be exposed at home and will drop the food while serving or place all the food from the bowl to their plate or try to eat out off the bowl. Hope this information works.
Yes, that is helpful.
By family style, do you mean shared snacks for the whole class?
We do that at the school I work for and I allow them to wash their hands or choose sanitizer, they sit at their desks and I have one friend pass out napkins, another friend pass out juice boxes or water bottles and then I pass the snack around. No one is allowed to eat until the whole class has their snack and then I sit with them in the group with my snack. I will ask a specific question that we talk about as a group like, "How do we know we're loved" or "what is friendship" and then we talk about that for the 15 minutes we eat snack
Love the questions! We are full day program. So we would be doing lunch together too. 6 to a table.
Oh well lunch can be a little more difficult because they bring they're own lunches and when a student is done eating, there's nothing for them to do at lunch time. So for that I would def have small activities out like coloring, Lego and maybe blocks or something.
The teachers should not be eating lunch with the kids. They should have their own lunch time away from them for a break.
Also with allergies present, you may want to have a allergy table for students who have allergies or at least put into place allergy policies such as no peanut butter in school etc.
